Experience the sounds of firing cannon, fifes, and drums as the Revolutionary War spirit descends upon Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, for the annual Battle at Chadds Ford - Historic Chadds Ford Days. The two-day festival, held Saturday, Sept. 13, and Sunday, Sept. 14, promises to deliver an engaging look at colonial life in America.
Organized by the Chadds Ford Historical Society, the event commemorates the Sept. 11, 1777, Battle of Brandywine. It was the largest single-day battle of the American Revolution. Historians believe that approximately 30,000 troops clashed that day, connecting the village of Chadds Ford to the American fight for independence from Great Britain.
On Saturday, gates open at 10 a.m. at the Chadds Ford Historical Society, located at 1736 Creek Road in Chadds Ford. Admission is free.
Battlefield reenactments will be held twice during the day, along with military drills for youth, colonial encampments, and demonstrations of colonial-era trades such as beer brewing, blacksmithing, wool dyeing, and wood carving. Artisans, local authors, nonprofits, live music, food trucks, and beverages from area producers will be offered for sale.
The day concludes with a new addition to this year's event: Tavern Night in the Grove from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. According to festival organizers, this activity will allow visitors to “step back in time” and socialize as their 18th-century counterparts once did. Cannon fire will start the evening, as the grove becomes a colonial tavern atmosphere with twinkling lanterns and candlelight. Guests can enjoy drinks from Braeloch Brewery, Chadds Ford Winery, Penn Distillery, and others while enjoying delicious food and traditional colonial entertainment.
“Tavern Night is going to be something special,” said Sandi Johnson, event coordinator at the Chadds Ford Historical Society, to Town Square Delaware. “It's more than just music and drinks — it's a way to capture the spirit of fellowship and fun that colonial taverns brought to their communities. We want people to feel like they're part of history while enjoying an unforgettable evening together.”
Sunday's schedule, which covers activities from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., will continue the battle reenactments and colonial demonstrations while adding family-friendly activities. Kids will be able to try their hand at making candles, tin crafting, marble games, and period dress-up, along with crafts.
