Bon Appétit has named Provenance in Philadelphia as one of the country's best new restaurants. Located at 408 S. Second St. in Headhouse Square, Provenance has gained national recognition for its culinary excellence under the direction of chef Nicholas Bazik and its innovative approach to fine dining.
Bon Appétit editor Amiel Stanek wrote that the modern French tasting menu at Provenance “arrest[ed] time for a moment ... compelling diners to pause.” He compared the Society Hill restaurant to a Formula 1 racing car. “Stopping time is Bazik's superpower,” he said.
Provenance features high-end amenities, such as a custom Molteni stove, a basement wine cellar, and an 11-seat chef's counter. Its dishes feature gold leaf-dusted prawns in jellied chogochujang.
The restaurant transformed a 200-year-old Philadelphia row house into a prix-fixe dining experience. A two-and-a-half-hour tasting menu of more than 20 courses blends French influences with subtle Korean touches. The tasting menu for one costs $225 before tax, tip, and drinks.
Bazik told The Philadelphia Inquirer in 2024, before the restaurant opened, that he intended Provenance to be a space “that can't be replicated anywhere, with food that can't be reproduced — because it shouldn't be. It isn't meant to be full of regulars.”
Provenance has received high praise from Philadelphia Magazine and the restaurant recommendation site called the Infatuation, despite some mixed reviews from critics like Craig LaBan.
Provenance's pastry chef, Abigail Dahan, was recognized as a semifinalist for the James Beard Award for Outstanding Pastry Chef or Baker earlier this year.
