Discover some local history this weekend at the Annual Heritage Day event in Paoli on Saturday, Sept. 20, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Held at the Paoli Memorial Grounds, adjacent to the Paoli Battlefield at Monument and Wayne avenues in Malvern, the event commemorates the Battle of Paoli, a pivotal episode in American Revolutionary history.

Heritage Day commemorates the Historic Battle of Paoli that was fought on Sept. 20-21, 1777. It is sometimes referred to as “The Paoli Massacre.” Gen. George Washington's troops adopted the phrase "Remember Paoli" after the battle.

The Paoli Battlefield Preservation Fund (PBPF), a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the historic significance of the battlefield through education, research, and conservation, hosts the event. Additionally, the Paoli Memorial Association maintains the grounds and monuments.

This event will include a presentation about Ned Hector, a Black Revolutionary War hero, by Noah Lewis, along with opportunities to explore local sites connected to the area's history and culture. Attendees can also witness 1700s-era scientific experiment demonstrations by a Benjamin Franklin living historian, Mike Kochan. Guests will also explore the evolution of military uniforms and weaponry through an American Military Timeline.

Members of the USO will be present to showcase its programs supporting soldiers and their families. The day will culminate in a solemn honor ceremony. It will include a wreath-laying at the graves of 52 fallen soldiers from the Battle of Paoli, a firing salute, bagpipes, and the playing of “Taps” to honor the fallen and all U.S. armed forces.

The event will also feature food trucks, crafters, and vendors to create a family-friendly celebration.

“Heritage Day is our annual tribute to remember the many brave fallen heroes that fought for our country right here in Southeastern Pennsylvania,” said Jim Christ, president of the PBPF, to the Daily Local News. “The Battle of Paoli was a seminal event in our country's history, and it is with great pride that we commemorate this important event. Heritage Day enables us to share these experiences with the community, as we look forward to hosting you to what has always been a fun and enlightening experience for all those that attend.”
