Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, the Philadelphia Women's Film Festival showcased more than 100 films that are "for, by, or about women," according to the festival's motto.
The festival, held from Sept. 18 to 28, highlighted women's contributions to cinema, featuring films from Emmy and Oscar-nominated filmmakers across the United States.
"It really honors the filmmakers, female filmmakers who came before us. I think a lot of people don't realize that in the beginning, it was mostly female filmmakers, and then it wasn't until it started making money that guys started taking over, so a lot of the original filmmakers were all women," said Suzi Nash, the artistic director for The Women's Film Festival, to Action News 6.
The festival featured films such as 20 Pounds to Happiness, a romantic comedy about a woman's dilemma involving gastric bypass surgery, and Bloodroot: A Culinary Uprising, which highlights the country's oldest and longest-running feminist restaurant.
The closing film, Know Her Name, addressed the lack of historical acknowledgment of women filmmakers and aimed to shed light on their often-overlooked contributions to cinema.
In addition to the film screenings, the festival offered activities such as Q&A sessions with filmmakers and a fashion show.
