Philadelphia’s mob history is taking center stage once again, this time on Netflix. The streaming platform’s latest true-crime series, Mob War: Philadelphia vs. The Mafia, takes a hard look at one of the most violent chapters in the city’s past. The docuseries dives into the brutal 1990s clash that erupted when rival factions fought to control organized crime in Philadelphia.
The three-part series is produced by RAW, the British production company behind hit docuseries like Don’t F**k With Cats and The Tinder Swindler. It runs about 45 minutes per episode and features firsthand accounts from former mob members, FBI agents, prosecutors, and journalists who lived through the chaos. The series opens after mob boss Nicky Scarfo’s 1986 arrest, which triggered a violent struggle for control. John Stanfa, backed by New York’s Five Families, tried to restore order until a brash new face, Joey Merlino, rose to challenge him.
The resulting conflict spiraled into assassination attempts, ambushes, and FBI crackdowns, capturing the city’s attention throughout the 1990s. Viewers will hear from figures like Ralph Natale and Ron Previte, whose cooperation with authorities ultimately helped dismantle the crime organization, according to Netflix Tudum.
With reenactments, wiretaps, and raw interview footage, Mob War: Philadelphia vs. The Mafia blends gritty storytelling with authentic true-crime details. It offers an in-depth look at how betrayal, power, and loyalty collided during one of Philly’s most infamous mob eras.
The docuseries is streaming now exclusively on Netflix, part of the platform’s expanding slate of true-crime content drawing global audiences to stories that hit close to home, especially for those familiar with Philadelphia’s storied streets.
