A beloved Jersey Shore boardwalk waterpark has shuttered, leaving its future uncertain.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Oct. 18, Splash Zone in Wildwood owner Andy Weiner said, “After 26 years of providing family fun and memories in Wildwood, New Jersey, Splash Zone Waterpark will be closing its doors to make way for an exciting new phase of development on the property.

“As we look to the future, we're exploring how our property can continue to bring life and enjoyment to Wildwood — possibly through a new development such as a boutique hotel or luxury condominiums,” Weiner continued.

In an NJ Advance Media report, Wildwood Mayor Ernie Troiano said he spoke with Weiner about converting the location at 3500 Boardwalk into a hotel. Troiano explained that the Wildwood economy depends on tourism, and more hotel rooms are needed. He has observed that more people are settling into permanent homes in Wildwood than in previous years.

The mayor said that the former Splash Zone's boardwalk location is directly across from one of the amusement piers run by Morey's Piers and Beachfront Water Parks.

“I said, personally, I'm looking at a big high-rise hotel and something that is in a prime location like that. There is nothing like it,” Troiano said in a statement to NJ Advance Media.

Troiano confirmed he has discussed the hotel idea with developer Eustace Mita, owner of the ICONA properties, a hotel brand. Mita's proposals to build hotels in Ocean City and Cape May were shot down by the municipalities in both communities. Mita did not respond to a request for comments.
