The MICHELIN Guide has recogized Pizzeria Beddia in Philadelphia as a Bib Gourmand award recipient.
The announcement was made in Philadelphia on Tuesday, Nov. 18, for the Northeast Cities Guide. It is the first time that Philadelphia restaurants have been honored by the prestigious international culinary and dining guide. Pizzeria Beddia joins more than 3,400 Bib Gourmand-awarded restaurants worldwide, including nine other Philadelphia eateries inducted into this year's guide.
Pizzeria Beddia, at 1313 N. Lee St. in Philadelphia's Fishtown neighborhood, is known for its pizza and wine pairings and a two-hour hoagie-focused private dining experience.
According to Lancaster Online, Joe Beddia, a graduate of Hempfield High School in Lancaster County, opened Pizzeria Beddia in 2013 as a cash-only operation with no seating and only two employees. It has now evolved into a larger, card-friendly establishment that was recognized in 2015 by Bon Appétit magazine for making the best pizza in the country. In 2019, TIME magazine included the pizza shop in its “World's Greatest Places” list.
Beddia, who didn't possess a culinary background before starting his business, told Lancaster Online he wanted to reimagine traditional pizza elements in new ways.
“If you're going to do the same thing all the time, how can it still be unique and interesting and weird or whatever, and not lose that personal touch?” he said.
