HBO announced on Thursday, Nov. 20, that it has renewed Task for a second season. Brad Ingelsby created the Delco crime drama, which stars Emmy winner Mark Ruffalo as FBI agent Tom Brandis, according to Variety.
In the series, Brandis leads an FBI task force investigating a series of armed robberies at drug houses in the Philadelphia suburbs run by a biker gang. The first season of Task also featured Raúl Castillo, Silvia Dionicio, Phoebe Fox, Fabien Frankel, Emilia Jones, Sam Keeley, Thuso Mbedu, Alison Oliver, Tom Pelphrey, and Martha Plimpton.
According to CBS News Philadelphia, Ingelsby, a native of Berwyn, Pennsylvania, is the creator of the HBO miniseries Mare of Easttown, which starred Kate Winslet. Similar to Mare of Easttown, Task features actors speaking with a Delco accent. The series was filmed in several locations in the Delaware Valley, including Wissahickon Valley Park, the Italian Market, and the Poconos.
Since its debut earlier this fall, Task has received positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. According to PhillyVoice, the season finale of Task on Oct. 23 drew 4 million viewers during its first three days, an approximately 30% jump from the three-day performance of its premiere. The show is one of HBO's fastest-growing inaugural series ever, according to Warner Bros. Discovery.
“We knew well in advance of its launch that we had a powerful drama series on our hands, but it has been so rewarding to witness the audience's fervor and embrace of this show as it grew week after week,” said Francesca Orsi, EVP, HBO Programming and head of HBO Drama Series and Films, in a statement shared with Deadline. “Rarely does a writer balance humanistic storytelling with intricate, explosive plotting, but Brad Ingelsby is one of our industry's greats and we have no doubt he will strike as profoundly and addictively once again in Season 2.”
Per the PhillyVoice, HBO did not share a Season 2 timeline and has not provided a complete list of returning cast members.
