TLC has announced the launch of a new reality series called Suddenly Amish, premiering on Tuesday, Jan. 13, at 10 p.m. Six non-Amish individuals will travel to an Amish community in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, to live by traditional rules and explore a radically different lifestyle.
The cast includes the following:
- Aaron, 40, a pastor's son from Michigan, is drawn to Amish devotion but needs to manage a hearing disability with technology.
- Billie Jo, 44, from New York admires Amish culture and already wears the traditional clothing.
- Esme, 25, from Texas, is pursuing a stable traditional family and letting go of glam.
- Judah, 22, a Missouri rapper, craves belonging but wrestles with germophobia and luxury desires.
- Kendra, a 33-year-old former dancer and content creator from California, is aiming to overcome body image concerns.
- Matt, a 34-year-old divorced dad from Texas, is seeking spiritual grounding.
The series features several individuals from the community, who open their homes and lives to these outsiders:
- Allen and Sarah, parents to four adopted children, serve as mentors.
- Bishop Vernon leads the community featured in the show, guiding participants as they abandon modern conveniences while navigating a faith-centered, disciplined, and communal way of life.
- James, a self-proclaimed rebel determined to regain his community's good graces after being shunned, struggles with temptation, tradition, and redemption.
- Emma, James' cousin who recently returned to the life, offers support as she navigates her relationships and personal struggles.
“With Suddenly Amish, we're expanding on TLC's legacy of immersive storytelling seen in shows like Breaking Amish and Return to Amish. This series offers a rare, intimate look at what happens when outsiders step into a deeply traditional community. We're proud to share a journey that's emotional, surprising, and undeniably human,” said Alon Orstein, senior vice president of production and development for TLC, in a news release.
