Road trips remain a dominant form of travel. According to Travel and Tour World, approximately 109.5 million Americans take them, aided by a national gas price average under $3 per gallon.
AAA's national forecast points to a notably strong year-end travel season in 2025, with travel activity across destinations and modes on solid footing.
Domestic air travel is rising, with an expected 8.03 million Americans on flights, even as average round-trip tickets hover around $900, up about 7% from last year.
Cruises, buses, and trains together have seen a 9% rise in travelers. Cruises are up 25% since 2019 as travel demand rebounds post-pandemic.
The 13-day holiday period from Dec. 20 to Jan. 1 is projected to be a record year-end travel period, with 122.4 million Americans traveling more than 50 miles, up approximately 2.2% from 2024, according to Travel and Tour World.
