The Wall Street Journal has named Philadelphia as the world's top place to visit in 2026, highlighting the city's planned celebrations for the 250th anniversary of the United States and other significant events.

Philadelphia will host six NCAA March Madness games at Xfinity Mobile Arena, six FIFA World Cup matches at Lincoln Financial Field in June and July, and a FIFA Fan Festival at Lemon Hill. The last match at the Linc, a Round of 16 knockout, will occur on the Fourth of July as U.S. semiquincentennial celebrations unfold citywide. Citizens Bank Park will host the MLB All-Star Game on July 14, capping off what The Wall Street Journal describes as "four wild months" for Philadelphia.

In preparation for the semiquincentennial celebrations, cultural and historical sites are getting upgrades. Renovations are underway at the Museum of the American Revolution. New galleries are being added at the National Constitution Center, and preparations are underway at Independence Hall and the Commerce Connector pedestrian walkway.

According to PhillyVoice, Philadelphia is budgeting approximately $120 million for 2026 event-related improvements and public safety. Roughly $45 million is being allocated to partner organizations, and more than $70 million for city services.

An economic impact study projects 2026 regional activity of $1.3 to $2.5 billion, with potential to support up to 17,100 jobs and generate $40 to $80 million in additional tax revenue.

PhillyVoice has reported that Econsult Solutions Inc., the firm that conducted the study, said that next year's sporting events in Philadelphia alone could generate more than $1 billion in total economic activity for the region. For example, the PGA Championship at Aronimink Golf Club in Delaware County in May is expected to draw approximately 200,000 attendees, boosting the region's economic activity.

Philadelphia's status as a top destination for 2026 continues to be reinforced by endorsements from media outlets such as Travel + Leisure, BBC Travel, and National Geographic.
