How about a little iced coffee to go with your baseball? For Reading Fightin Phils fans, the team's newest identity for an August morning game, the “Reading Iced Coffees,” is picking up steam.
According to WFMZ-TV 69 News, the team's promotion unveiled last Saturday, Feb. 14, went viral after its release.
“We were very fortunate that a couple of bigger media personalities, Phillies writers, picked it up,” Director of Media Relations Jake Starr said. “And then from there, it really just snowballed, right? Like it got picked up by MILB, by Major League Baseball social media accounts. It got picked up by guys from ESPN, CBS, Bleacher, like Barstool.”
“We had a limited run of merchandise available at first. That did sell out pretty quickly. So, we made everything available for preorder,” said Executive Director of Graphic Arts and Merchandise Ryan Springborn in a statement to WFMZ-TV 69 News.
According to Action News 6ABC, the Double-A affiliate for the Philadelphia Phillies set a record for merchandise sales in a single day after the announcement.
Team officials describe the concept as a breakfast-themed extension of their morning games tradition, blending iced coffee imagery with baseball. The team will wear the Iced Coffees uniforms during their Aug. 25 morning game at FirstEnergy Stadium in Reading against the Binghamton Rumble Ponies.
Fans can purchase tickets for the game online. The first 2,000 adults through the gates that day will receive an Iced Coffees hat.
