On Sunday, Jan. 4, the Atlantic City Expressway has switched to all-electronic tolls, which is now in effect for drivers. The Atlantic City Expressway becomes the first New Jersey highway to implement a fully cashless system, with drivers across the board seeing a 3% toll increase.

Tolls for a passenger car traveling the full length from Route 42 to Atlantic City will be $6.30 with E-ZPass and $13.60 via Toll by Plate. Tolls vary for larger vehicles.

Non-E-ZPass drivers will receive Toll By Plate invoices after 30 days or once $50 in tolls accrue, whichever comes first. Mailed bills carry a 30-day payment window and a $5 penalty if unpaid.

Drivers without an E-ZPass can sign up at the new Customer Service Center inside Frank Farley Plaza to obtain one.

"It's just a lot safer for our customers that travel on the roadway. It makes for a smoother experience. We won't have traffic backups," said Karen Hutchings, director of tolls for the South Jersey Transportation Authority (SJTA), in a statement shared with CBS News Philadelphia.

There is potential for cashless tolling to expand to the Garden State Parkway and the New Jersey Turnpike; however, no decision has been made to implement cashless tolling on these roadways, according to CBS News Philadelphia.
