In December, the actress and comedian launched the Quinta Brunson Field Trip Fund. The organization allows teachers in the Philadelphia School District to apply for money for grants to give students field trips.
“I’m proud to support Philadelphia students with experiences that remind them their dreams are valid and their futures are bright,” Brunson said in a statement. Field trips opened my world, sparked my creativity, and helped me imagine a future beyond what I saw every day."
The fund is in partnership with district officials, and teachers will be able to apply for funding through a short application. Applicants will get an evaluation by an independent and internal group of educators. This fund will provide money twice a year to eligible teachers.
Brunson is a Philadelphia native and grew up in the school system. Her Emmy award-winning series, Abbott Elementary, is in reference to her fifth-grade teacher, Joyce Abbott.
Philadelphia School District Superintendent, Tony B. Watlington Sr. is just as excited about this new opportunity. "This commitment to equitably expanding opportunities for students to have experiences outside of their classroom will help accelerate student achievement, and we are becoming the fastest improving, large urban school district in the nation," said Watlington in a statement.
