Philadelphia International Airport has launched Enhanced Passenger Processing (EPP) for international arrivals, using touchless facial comparison technology and a biometric system to speed processing for U.S. citizens returning from overseas.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Philadelphia International Airport announced the launch of EPP technology at the airport on Wednesday, Jan. 28.

The EPP system automatically captures travelers' photos and live images for passport photos and CBP records, verifying identity and citizenship. The system then runs vetting and creates a crossing record within seconds, with CBP officers assisting as needed.

Officials note that participation in EPP is voluntary. Travelers may opt out and proceed with the traditional international arrivals process.

According to CPB, travelers are still required to meet legal requirements and possess proper documents for entry. They are subject to inspection and must adhere to visa terms or risk detention and removal.

Since its nationwide rollout in August 2025, EPP has reduced wait times by about 25% after being deployed at 15 U.S. airports, six preclearance sites, five seaports, and one land border crossing.

"PHL Airport is a major transatlantic hub. Travelers arriving at PHL Airport will feel the benefits of this new technology in shorter wait times, faster processing through CBP arrivals inspection, and the improved ability to make their connecting flights," said Cleatus Hunt Jr., Customs and Border Protection's area port director for the Area Port of Philadelphia, to The Patch of Philadelphia.

“PHL is proud to be one of the airports selected to offer EPP for the millions of U.S. citizens that arrive on international flights," a representative for the Philadelphia International Airport said. "As a major transatlantic hub, being able to quickly process through customs and head home or to a connecting flight is one of the best guest experiences we can offer travelers."
