The Philadelphia Zoo is marking America’s 250th Anniversary with a massive, city‑wide call to action—and it’s something everyone can be part of. To honor the milestone year and bring the community together, the Zoo has launched its 250,000 Actions for Animals initiative. The goal? To inspire people across Philadelphia and around the world to complete 250,000 acts that support animals, people, and the natural habitats we all depend on—by the end of 2026.
This challenge is rooted in the Zoo’s long‑standing mission to spark passion for wildlife conservation. But it’s also about celebrating Philly’s spirit. As President & CEO Dr. Jo‑Elle Mogerman explains, 2026 won’t just be filled with big celebrations—it will be remembered as the year people came together to make a real difference for wildlife and future generations.
The Zoo emphasizes that an Action for Animals can be simple, meaningful, and accessible to absolutely anyone. Picking up litter, planting native plants, participating in bird or frog counts, using reusable bags or bottles, checking on a neighbor’s garden, or even taking someone birding for the first time all qualify. The Zoo hopes these actions inspire people to rethink how humans and wildlife can thrive together.
Throughout 2026, the Philadelphia Zoo will host on‑site activities like enrichment‑toy building, bird‑feeder making, and wildlife surveys. But actions can take place anywhere—at home, in a neighborhood park, or in your own backyard. Participants can submit their acts through the Zoo’s website, including a short description and photo.
To celebrate these contributions, the Zoo will give out 250 Gifts of Gratitude such as memberships, tickets, gift cards, Zoo Keys, and even special animal experiences.
With Philadelphia’s underdog energy and creativity leading the way, the Zoo believes the community can rise to the challenge. One action at a time, the city can help build a better future where wildlife and people truly thrive together.
