The Newtown Borough Police Department is warning residents about a new email scam involving individuals impersonating law enforcement officials.
According to The Patch of Newtown, the scam involves fraudsters sending fake emails claiming to be from the police department and alleging that recipients have outstanding warrants or fines. Police said the emails are not legitimate and are part of a phishing campaign by criminals to obtain personal and financial information.

"The Newtown Borough Police Department will never contact members of the public via email to demand payment or request sensitive information," police said in a statement about the scam shared with the Patch.
Police officials are asking residents to be aware of unsolicited emails or calls claiming to be from the police, never share personal or financial information, and verify the authenticity of any communication by contacting the department directly.
If you receive such an email, do not respond and do not provide any information to the sender. Instead, delete it and report the incident to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
