A teen-run thrift shop called FAB FITS in Kensington is showing Philadelphia that there's always hope for second chances.

The store offers free clothing to customers while focusing on workforce development for its teen staff. Operated by the nonprofit FAB Youth Philly, the shop on Atlantic Street is staffed by teens who assist peers in selecting secondhand clothing, including everyday wear and formal outfits.

The teens who work at the shop describe the program as building confidence and purpose, not just providing clothing.

"You never know what someone's going through," said 19-year-old Elishama Johnson of Nicetown in a statement shared with Action News 6abc. "Maybe they have one pair of something they like, and they want another pair. This is great for that."

Clothing offered at the store has either been donated or purchased to benefit the less fortunate.

Founder Rebecca Fabiano explained that the idea for FAB FITS originated from years of listening to teens tell her what they needed.

"Teens said, 'I would shop in a place like this if it existed,'" she said.

Since opening in February, the store has seen steady foot traffic and is funded by grants. Teens earn at least $15 per hour to gain work experience and build their résumés and job skills.

A sewing room downstairs at the store offers teens opportunities to learn clothing upcycling, expanding their skills beyond retail work.

"I like the fact that we can help other people. People come here to feel comfortable," said teen employee Destiny Providence to 6abc.

FAB FITS underscores the impact that youth-led community programs like this can have on teen empowerment, employment skills, and social support for Philadelphia youth.
