Located in the Fairmount section of Philadelphia, Eastern State Penitentiary was one of the most famous prisons in the world, with a list of former inmates that includes bank robber “Slick Willie” Sutton and gangster Al Capone. No longer in use, the crumbling cellblocks and empty guard towers are a ghost of the grand architecture for which the prison was known. The penitentiary offers tours year-round and in the fall features the popular—and frightening—“Terror Behind the Walls” haunted house.

This April, Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site invites visitors to engage deeply with conversations around justice, history, creativity, and community through a wide range of programs designed to connect the past with the urgent issues shaping today’s society. From thoughtful discussions on civil rights and criminal justice to immersive spring break experiences and hands‑on art activities, April offers meaningful ways to explore the historic site and its powerful stories.

At the heart of the month’s programming is Justice 101, a dynamic series bringing together leading voices in civil rights, criminal justice, and public policy. Through film screenings and live conversations, Justice 101 examines how incarceration systems operate today while grounding those discussions in historical context. These programs are part of Eastern State’s ongoing A Time for Liberty initiative, which encourages visitors to reflect on justice, storytelling, and the human experience within the prison’s historic walls.

“April at Eastern State offers a range of programs that invite visitors to engage more directly with the history and ongoing impact of the criminal justice system,” said Dr. Kerry Sautner, President and CEO. “We’re especially excited about this month’s Justice 101 programming, which brings timely conversations and new perspectives into the space.”

Spring break continues through April 5 with The Great Escape: Stories of Resistance and Creativity, included with admission. This immersive experience highlights how incarcerated individuals have historically drawn on art, faith, humor, and resilience, featuring interactive tours, storytelling, music, poetry, and participatory activities.

Additional April experiences include a Jewish History Self‑Guided Tour in honor of Passover, a drop‑in art activity with Philadelphia‑based artist Mark Loughney, and a family‑friendly Scout Day focused on architecture and historic preservation.

Justice 101 events this month include a screening and discussion of Free Joan Little, exploring civil rights and education, and a timely conversation on Prison Gerrymandering, examining how the practice impacts democratic representation and communities nationwide. Both programs are free and include pre‑event receptions.

With daily tours, interactive experiences, and thoughtful public programs, April at Eastern State offers visitors a chance to reflect, learn, and connect — making history resonate through conversations that matter today.
