The Philadelphia Mechanical Street Cleaning Program kicked off Monday, April 6. It runs until Thursday, October 29. Fourteen neighborhoods will get swept as the city works to cut down on trash in areas that need it most.

According to NBC Philadelphia.com, crews will sweep Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., except on city holidays. The work includes machine sweeping, picking up sidewalk litter, and hauling away compacted trash.

This year brings bigger boundaries in some spots. City staff said the bolded boundaries have been expanded to include additional streets, while other areas remain the same from the previous year.

Frankford, Germantown, Kensington, Logan, Nicetown, North Central, Paschall, Point Breeze, Port Richmond, South Philly, Southwest, Strawberry Mansion, West Fairhill, and West Philly make up the 14 target zones.

Cars can't park on certain streets during cleaning hours. Signs mark these spots. Restrictions shift throughout the day in three chunks: 9 to 11 a.m., 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and 1 to 3 p.m.

Some routes will force people to move cars. A warning period is active right now for all 14 sections.

Come Monday, April 13, the Parking Authority starts writing tickets. Violators will pay fines if they leave cars parked during restricted times.

SweepPHL lets residents track the cleaning broom online. This web-based map shows where crews are working in real time, which helps people avoid getting ticketed.

Four days a week until late October, sweepers will hit the streets. City leaders picked neighborhoods where litter piles up and streets need the most attention.
