If you ride SEPTA regularly, now is the time to check the expiration date on your SEPTA Key card. A total of 31,091 SEPTA Key cards are set to expire on April 30, 2026, and taking a few simple steps now can help ensure you don’t lose access to your Travel Wallet funds or unused passes.
The most important thing riders can do is register their SEPTA Key card. Registration not only protects your card if it’s lost or misplaced, but it also makes transferring funds and passes much easier when your card expires. If your card is registered, you can move everything to a new card online, without needing to visit a service location.
According to SEPTA, registered riders can transfer all Travel Wallet balances and passes to a new SEPTA Key card through SEPTAKey.org or the SEPTA app. If the new card already has money on it, the transferred amount will simply be added to the existing balance. Riders who had Autoload set up on their old card don’t need to worry—Autoload will automatically be applied to the new card as well.
To transfer fare products from an expiring card, riders will need to purchase a new SEPTA Key card for $4.95 from a Fare Kiosk, SEPTA Sales Location, or external retailer. The good news? If you register the new card within 30 days, that $4.95 purchase fee will be credited back to your Travel Wallet for future use.
Once you have your new card, there are three ways to complete the transfer:
- Visit a SEPTA Sales Location
- Call the SEPTA Key Customer Call Center at 855‑567‑3782
- Use the Card‑to‑Card Replacement option online
If your card expires unregistered, your options become more limited. In that case, your only way to recover unused Travel Wallet funds is to contact the SEPTA Key Customer Call Center to request a credit or refund—another strong reason to register your card now.
SEPTA also reminds riders that contactless payment options are available. You can pay for Bus, Metro, and Regional Rail fares using a contactless credit card, debit card, smartphone, or smartwatch. Contactless fares cost the same as Travel Wallet fares, and on Bus and Metro, your first two transfers are free when using contactless payment.
Bottom line: take a minute to check your SEPTA Key card today. Registering and transferring early can save you time, stress, and money—so you can keep riding smoothly through 2026 and beyond.
